A children's services interview is rarely about catching you out. It's about whether the people on the other side of the table can picture you in the room with a vulnerable child, on a difficult day, making a safe decision. Here's how to walk in ready.
Before anything else, understand who you're meeting. A CAMHS team, an SEN school, a residential children's home and a complex-care package are very different environments, and they want to hear that you know the difference.
Most interviews in this sector lean heavily on "tell me about a time…" and "what would you do if…" questions. They are looking for judgement, not a perfect script.
Tip: Use a simple structure for scenario answers — the situation, what you did, and the outcome. Keep the child's safety and dignity at the centre of every example.
Compliance matters in this field, and being organised says a lot about you. Have these to hand before the day:
The week before: confirm the time, format and location, and prepare two or three strong examples you can adapt to different questions.
The night before: lay out your documents, plan your route or test your video link, and get a proper night's sleep — you'll think more clearly for it.
The morning of: arrive early, switch your phone off, and take a breath before you go in. Calm, warm and prepared beats rehearsed every time.
Finally, remember that values carry this sector. Show that you genuinely care about the children you'd be working with, and the rest of the conversation gets a lot easier.
